I was actually trying to think of a suitable topic to write, but then I thought about this.. often as you get into a new series, particularly when there is a lot of characters (male/female). In my case it would be for Saki, since that is the anime I am watching (actually waiting with anticipation) at the moment.
How is it that people start to develop favorites, liking that particular character or group?
Often in anime, there is a manga background, so the manga might be already running for months before the anime begins, but for those who only have the anime as a background knowledge, how is it then do they form the background for liking a character? Do people choose to like a character simply because of superficially the way they appear? Or for other reasons like personality type or back story?
I see in other anime like Azumanga Daioh, or Lucky Star that camps are quickly formed around characters they like, but for series such as Saki, how would then people choose who they like? Would they like the racks of Nodoka, the unexpected type like Koromo, or the onesan type like Mihoko. (FYI, these aren’t my favored characters, but just as an example).
I am wondering how strong is it for anyone to consider viewing the anime, and then choosing a character to like, since there seems to be the concept of moe in play in this series.

I base my favorite characters by:
1. Uniqueness. The more unique, the better. I hate those typical moeshit, tsunderes, yanderes, lolis etc.
2. Personality. A cool personality is fine too. And again, I hate those typical personalities on anime characters. No further explanation needed.
3. Appearance. No explanation needed.
Often times, my reasoning is similar- but if the show has those personality type – then the viewer would eventually see it or not..
I don’t know – cool personality can back fire I believe. In Bleach there’s the cat (former captain 2) and she’s pretty cool.. and I see people go gaga over her – but am not impressed by her.
Appearance in terms of what? Characters are drawn different after all.
I dont know about the appearance. You just somehow find some anime character attractive or whatever..
Well . . . uniqueness is terrible as a RL criterion, though I suppose it has merit in entertainment. (“Hey, I’ve never seen this degenerative disease before, or this particular breed of insanity!”)
Somehow an upbeat personality plus tsundere/fang gets me. If they’re unique I’ll take that too.
Upbeat is always appealing!
Well I like Saki. Nodoka has stupidly big boobs. Koromo’s pretty cute. And there are a few others I like in Saki. But Saki overall lol. Reminds me of Yoshika a bit… might be the hairstyle lol.
And I think its only natural that people develop favourites, we all have our preferences, and even if it is hard to choose out of the masses of moe girls and cute guys(well…not masses of cute guys… theres a lack of em in the shows I watch lol.).
Fanservicemoeshit. Just ridiculously shitty crap with a bunch of shitty girls. Why the hell can anyone watch a minute of this shit?
I don’t see any complaints from people who love fanservice series.. other than that why else did I see so many fan service objects in Japan?
Appearances and personality. Then again, there are stereotypes that always make a character more likeable for the person who likes that stereotype, meaning a higher chance of a stereotyped character actually being liked if it fits your liking.
I agree.. thanks!

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.
I kind of agree with you..
I agree too. I have never loved a character only because of his/her stereotype.
I don’t really have reasons for liking characters, I also tend to ignore the stereotypes that are often presented during a show. Although I do tend do highly dislike people who are too serious about winning and escapists
Manga is no a reason for me but Im agree with Kairu. Sometimes also the Seiyuu has something to do too!!
Well I thought about this question recently, and with a recent small figure purchase – my reasoning for liking a character either falls into these categories – back story, continuing story, and appearance, has to be pretty unique – meaning spread and spread of pictures of a character. I’ll be writing a small figure review on my blog soon.. ^_^ and explore the question more there.. >_<
This is also a good reason on pushing myself to continue my features.
Thanks for the comments!

Any character that does not lick me with memories of Inoue Orihime are fine. Almost. I also happen to dislike air heads, yanderes and lolis.
For me it’s usually personality, and what kinds of clothes they wear, and such. I hardly ever like characters for boobs or sex appeal. That doesn’t always make a great female character.
I’m not going to lie that most of the time I like moe fodder characters but at the end of the day I never really think of them very highly.
