After the 1st arc, which in my opinion, is equal to Higurashi's first arc, Umineko does a 180 degree turn into comedy and action etc. Things happen in a way that you can NOT take it seriously, yet there are times when the drama is great. It's a very wierd combo that can put off a lot of viewers who are hooked in by the first ep. Basically, don't expect anything like Higurashi (After the 1st arc) or you'll be very disappointed. But yes the first episode was pretty bad, and not just in terms of adaptation - I'm glad episode 2 stepped it up a bit.
